The title is a four kanji compound for “to show a great determination” or “to express a passionate desire to seek the truth”. Huike (Eka) was a high priest of the late Northern and Southern Dynasties in China and the second founder of Zen Buddhism. He wanted a teacher to “open the gate of the elixir of universal compassion to liberate all beings”, but Bodhidharma refused. So Huike cut off his arm (Danpi) as proof of his determination.
